Across the South countless statewide bills have been introduced that spread viscious lies and myths about transgender people, queer people, and LGB people who fall along a gender spectrum, either by appearance or behavior, not deemed within, “a natural order of God.” These bills use decades old right-wing rhetoric pawned as words of faith that paint us and our communities as violent deviant criminals. The reality is these bills are terrorizing our communities and unjustly excuse the use of violence against us.
Nearly ever state in our region has seen these backlash “bathroom bills” introduced into legislative sessions. They have moved quickly in both secret closed meetings and explicit open sponsorship laced with hate and disdain. And while we continue statewide fights in North Carolina and Mississippi, we’re seeing the inevitable uprising of local ordinances and school board policies in South Carolina and Alabama that are fueling the culture war against the ways we choose to express our genders and sexualities in the bodies we carry and the lives we live.
But the queer south is rising up to turn the tide and fight for a region where we can live free from fear. In times like these our visible resistance is critical. Join the call to action and resistance in Alabama this week on Wednesday and Saturday to put pressure on local officials in Oxford to repeal an anti-trans ordinance that makes using the bathroom a crime.
