Como personas queer en el Sur, puede ser poco común estar en espacios compartidos con personas queer mayores. En el espacio SONG, tenemos la fortuna de sentarnos a los pies de nuestrxs mayores que nos brindan sabiduría, amabilidad y nos muestran cómo nutrir y apreciar a nuestra comunidad queer. La Sra. Kat Johnson, de Atlanta, fue una de nuestras queridas lesbianas mayores. Para muchxs de nuestrxs miembros fue una de las primeras personas mayores que conocieron que se sentía orgullosamente lesbiana marimacha Negra.
Estamos muy tristes de compartir que la Sra. Kat falleció y se convirtió en una ancestra querida. Durante varios años, la Sra. Kat, junto con Mama Pat y la Sra. As queer people in the South, it can be rare to be in shared space with queer elders. In SONG space, we are blessed to sit at the feet of elders who extend wisdom, kindness and show us how to nurture and cherish our queer community. Ms. Kat Johnson was one of our beloved lesbian elders from Atlanta. For many in our membership, she was one of the first openly proud Black butch lesbian elders they met.
We are extremely sad to share that Ms. Kat has passed and transitioned into a beloved ancestor. Over several years, Ms. Kat, alongside Mama Pat and Ms. Cherry, threw a Rise & Grind brunch at Gaycation and shared her wisdom in our elder circle. She was known for being a notorious host. Her whole house and huge yard were set up to entertain her community. That’s how she showed her love, always sending folks home with trays of food and hauling a trailer of meat for her Carnivores Delight feast on Saturday afternoons. She created intergenerational throwdowns for folks to bask in joy and laughter and fill their bellies with the most delicious meals. The stories Ms. Kat lovingly shared gave our younger queer and trans members a physical connection to our queer legacies.
We send our deepest condolences and love to her family, friends, and loved ones. We want to express deep gratitude and love to her on her transition. May she continue to live on in our hearts, memories and spirits. We will share more information on how folks can honor her legacy as we get it.
