    Our Membership

SONG believes that social movements are one of our main hopes for liberation. Organizations are one of the key building blocks of social movements. Organizations are made up of people—leaders. We build membership (or our base) as a way to build the skills, connection and leadership of thousands of Southern rural LGBTQ people of color, immigrant people and working class people – united together in the struggle for dignity and justice for all people. In order to transform the South we must build our collective power, our people power, which comes from thousands and thousands of us uniting to make the South the home our communities need it to be.

Organizers are trained to believe that we don’t pr Organizers are trained to believe that we don’t predict the future, we create it. And that is exactly what almost 100 people from across the South did over Memorial Day weekend in Atlanta.

We gathered because we love our hometowns. We gathered to strategize and build toward a South whose land, air, and water is not polluted by hyper scale data centers. We gathered because we believe everyone deserves affordable utilities. We gathered because we need one another to survive and to create a future we all deserve and we believe organizing is how we get there.

Queer Water Avengers is one of SONG's Member Initiated Projects (MIP) that explores our relationship to water and why it matters! Queer Water Avengers is a series of events in the Richmond and Durham areas focused on improving our relationships with water through skill-building and intentional reflection on swimming, water safety, water purification, disaster preparedness, historical and spiritual connections, and other ways we relate to water.
