Our Membership

SONG believes that social movements are one of our main hopes for liberation. Organizations are one of the key building blocks of social movements. Organizations are made up of people—leaders. We build membership (or our base) as a way to build the skills, connection and leadership of thousands of Southern rural LGBTQ people of color, immigrant people and working class people – united together in the struggle for dignity and justice for all people. In order to transform the South we must build our collective power, our people power, which comes from thousands and thousands of us uniting to make the South the home our communities need it to be.

How to Fight Well During Elections:

As a political home, SONG members hold conflicting views about engaging in elections and electoral organizing. Elections can be a divisive time in our movement and we struggle to navigate the strong emotions that come up in our conversations about voting and not voting, political candidates, and organizing others to vote.

This practice space will attempt to grow our ability to tolerate the discomfort of our divisions on elections and feel how shaping towards the possibility of our contradictions, rather than the pain, can strengthen our relationships and political home.

Member-Initiated Projects (MIPS) is an invitation Member-Initiated Projects (MIPS) is an invitation to dream, scheme, experiment, and workshop ways to build a queer South worthy of our people. In this political moment, the work of SONG is to break isolation, imagine and build beyond the limits of present conditions, and to find one another through shared work and commitment. Which is why we are calling SONG members to crew up and get to work on a project connected to SONG's current organizational work and priorities: ⚔️Protecting Queer and Trans Kindred 🪧Confronting Criminalization and Militarization 🏠️Housing & Land Liberation

This call for proposals invites you to deepen relationships, incubate ideas, test their possibilities, and contribute to long-term movement building. MIPS can take the form of workshops, mutual-aid efforts, cultural projects, or something we have not yet imagined (see here for previous MIPS).
