An uprising, clarion call, strategy session and homecoming for SONG members in the time of Trump
For 24 years SONG has organized in the hotbed of right-wing strategizing, experimentation, and implementation. Whatever you’ve heard or whatever they say about us, what we know is that the South has long been a stalwart and a bastion of resistance and courage amidst foul and violent legacy, legislation, and culture. Our efforts have often been looked upon with pity, and our organizing and infrastructure too often under-resourced, abandoned, and not taken seriously. While we live in states deemed “red and left for dead”, in towns and cities that have been forsaken to lose and entire communities left to fend for ourselves, we’ve learned a thing or two about what it means to survive, to fight back, and to build culture and power in these places.
Our enemies have waged battles in our backyards but not without our organizing and our outright refusal to live without our desire nor embody their shame. Our defiance and our desire has been our survival and our resistance. Our longing for one another has been the lifeblood of our organizing. We’ve built the SONG kinship network and political home on these values and to break our isolation, but we’ve also evolved it to build and flex our collective and unified power in our hometowns and cities all across the South.
The decades long path of a culture war with the wish of our deaths at its core is not new or a shock. The time to protect and defend our communities, to build sanctuary, to dream and live free from fear is also not new, but the urgency of the call and the mandate rings clearer than ever under the Trump regime. We’re inviting you to join us for the year of turning up! How can you get down?
